I Built an Ubuntu Linux Server on Google Cloud: Virtual Machines Explained Simply
There was a problem I needed to solve. My physical computer had limited space, and I wanted to keep learning, testing, building, and experimenting with different systems without overloading my local machine.
So I asked a simple question: what if I do not need to buy another computer physically? What if I can create one online?
That is where cloud computing becomes powerful. Instead of buying another laptop and setting everything up from scratch, I used Google Cloud to create a new computer on the internet.
This was not my first cloud project. I have already worked on about three cloud-related projects, and each one has taught me something different. But this Ubuntu Linux server project made one big idea crystal clear:
A computer does not always need to sit on your table before you can use it.
Sometimes, your computer can live in the cloud. You cannot touch it, but it is real. It has memory, storage, an operating system, and network access. It can run commands, install software, host websites, test applications, run automation, and support AI workflows.
I created an Ubuntu Linux server on Google Cloud. To a beginner, that may sound complex. In plain language, I created a working Linux computer in the cloud.
What Is Linux?
Linux is an operating system. An operating system is the main software that helps a computer run programs, manage files, connect to the internet, and use hardware resources.
Windows and macOS are operating systems. Linux is also an operating system, but it is especially popular in servers, cloud platforms, cybersecurity, AI systems, software development, and automation.
When you open websites, use apps, stream content, or connect to digital services, Linux is often part of the infrastructure behind the scenes. That is why learning Linux matters.
What Is Ubuntu?
Ubuntu is a Linux distribution. Think of Linux as a family, and Ubuntu as one of the most widely used members.
Ubuntu is popular because it is stable, beginner-friendly, well-documented, and practical for production work. It is used by developers, cloud engineers, QA testers, DevOps teams, cybersecurity learners, and AI builders.
For this project, I selected Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Minimal on Google Cloud. Minimal means it includes only essential tools, which is perfect for server use where efficiency and security matter more than visual extras.
What Is a Virtual Machine?
A virtual machine (VM) is a computer created inside another larger physical computer. Cloud providers like Google run huge data centers and split their hardware into many isolated virtual computers for users.
Each VM can have:
- Its own operating system
- Its own CPU allocation
- Its own memory
- Its own storage
- Its own network configuration
- Its own security settings
Even though the machine is remote, it behaves like a real computer you control directly.
What Is a Cloud Server?
A cloud server is a server that runs in cloud infrastructure instead of sitting in your room or office. You can access it over the internet from anywhere.
This gives huge flexibility. Your development environment is no longer tied to one physical device. If you travel, you can still connect and continue your work.
Why I Used Google Cloud
I used Google Cloud Platform (GCP) because it provides professional cloud infrastructure and a clear workflow for provisioning virtual machines with Compute Engine.
For this setup, I used Compute Engine to create an Ubuntu VM without buying extra hardware. That is one of the biggest strengths of cloud systems: start small, test ideas, and scale later.
How I Created the Ubuntu VM on Google Cloud
I created the VM in Google Cloud Console under Compute Engine using these settings:
- Project: my-linux-server
- Instance name: instance-20260603-090601
- Region: us-central1 (Iowa)
- Zone: us-central1-a
- Machine type: e2-medium (2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM)
- Boot disk: Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Minimal
- Disk type: Balanced persistent disk
- Disk size: 10 GB
- Estimated cost: about $25.46/month
After provisioning, the VM status changed to Running and the Ubuntu cloud server was live.
Why Machine Type and Cost Matter
The CPU is the server's processing brain, and memory is its active workspace. Choosing the right machine type is important because more resources usually mean higher cost.
Good cloud architecture is not about choosing the biggest server. It is about choosing the right server for the workload.
What Can This Ubuntu Cloud Server Be Used For?
One Ubuntu cloud server can support many use cases:
- Learning Linux commands and administration
- Hosting websites and backend services
- Running QA automation and test scripts
- Deploying Docker containers
- Testing AI workflows and agent backends
- Game server hosting experiments
- Cloud gaming infrastructure practice
Virtualization vs Containerization
Virtualization and containerization are connected but different:
- Virtual machine: A full computer environment with its own operating system.
- Container: A lightweight package that runs an application and its dependencies.
Docker is a common container platform. In practice, many teams create an Ubuntu VM first, then run Docker containers inside it.
Why Server Security Matters
Any internet-connected server must be secured from day one. Core security practices include:
- Using strong authentication
- Keeping the operating system updated
- Limiting open ports
- Applying firewall rules
- Using SSH securely
- Monitoring access and service exposure
A good cloud engineer does not just create servers. They protect them.
What I Learned About Cloud Cost Management
The estimated VM cost was about $25.46 per month. If a server is used for learning and testing only, stopping it when idle is essential.
Cloud resources are like electricity: if you leave them running, you pay. Cost awareness is a core cloud skill.
Why This Matters for Small Businesses
Cloud infrastructure is not only for large companies. Small businesses can use cloud servers for websites, booking systems, internal tools, automation, QA environments, and secure backends.
This lowers entry barriers and enables modern digital operations without investing in physical servers upfront.
What This Project Taught Me About Computer Science

I built an Ubuntu Linux server on Google Cloud, but what I really built was a flexible learning environment. A small cloud server can teach very big lessons.
Every modern digital system starts with core building blocks: a machine, an operating system, storage, memory, network, security, and a clear purpose. This project is one more step in that journey.
